“Self-Portrait”
2022 Original Artwork by Alice Aida Ayers, Hand-Stitched Fabric, Mixed Media, 28” X 33”
Driving through the village, beneath mango trees and the scent of jasmine, I felt an invisible thread tug at my soul—as if I were
remembering rather than discovering. Visiting the underground chambers where enslaved people were once held, I was overwhelmed by
the weight of memory, the presence of ancestors pressing close. A part of me remained there. Years later, as project manager for Creative
Solutions Resource Systems in Zanzibar, life offered lessons through friendships, challenges, art, and teaching. Patience, process, and
love became etched into me. But the deepest truths came through making and sharing art—moments that revealed not just technique,
but something essential about humanity, and about myself.
